Privacy Policy — WriteBetter

The party responsible for data processing described in this policy (the "controller") in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is:

2. Overview

WriteBetter is a local-first macOS application. With the exception of the specific network connections described in Section 4, all of your commands, prompts, run history, settings and usage data are created, processed and stored entirely on your own Mac. WriteBetter does not operate an analytics service, does not track your usage for marketing purposes, and does not maintain a general-purpose backend that your everyday use of the app talks to.

3. What Data Is Stored, and Where

a) App data (commands, prompts, history, settings, context sessions)
Stored locally on your device in WriteBetter's application data folder (`~/Library/Application Support/WriteBetter/`), using Apple's SwiftData framework. This data is never uploaded to WriteBetter's servers or to any third party as part of normal use.

b) AI provider API keys
If you connect your own OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic, or other provider API key, it is stored only in the macOS Keychain, protected by the operating system. It is never written to the local application data store, never included in log files, and never transmitted to WriteBetter's own servers.

c) Local logs
Diagnostic logs (`client.log`) are written locally on your device to help you or us troubleshoot issues you report. They are not automatically transmitted anywhere.

4. Network Connections the App Makes

WriteBetter's core functionality — running your commands against an AI provider — sends the relevant text directly from your Mac to the AI provider you have configured (e.g. OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, or a local model via Ollama/LM Studio), using your own API key or local installation. That transmission goes straight to the provider you chose and is governed by that provider's own privacy policy; WriteBetter's own servers are not involved in, and do not see, this content — except in the two specific cases below.

Beyond that, the app makes network connections only in these limited cases:

- Software updates: WriteBetter checks for new versions using Sparkle, an open-source update framework. This check does not include any of your commands, prompts or content.
- License verification: fully offline. License tokens are cryptographically signed and verified on your device; no data about your license is sent over the network at any point.
- n8n workflow path (opt-in, admin/pro feature only): if you have configured an n8n webhook for admin/pro command execution, the relevant command text is routed through your configured webhook and WriteBetter's backend to execute that workflow. This only happens for commands you explicitly run through this path.
- One-time cloud import: if you previously used an older, cloud-based version of WriteBetter, a one-time import can pull your existing library from WriteBetter's servers using your legacy account credentials. This happens once, at your request, and is not part of ongoing operation.
- AI Assistant Integration (local MCP bridge, opt-in, off by default): when you turn on Settings → AI Assistant Integration, WriteBetter listens only on `127.0.0.1:51515` — a loopback address that is reachable only from your own Mac and never from your local network or the internet. This allows a local MCP-capable application (such as Claude Desktop), running on the same Mac, to list, create, or update your commands and read their run history, entirely on-device. WriteBetter's servers are not involved in this feature at all. Any handling of your data by the MCP client itself (e.g. Claude Desktop) once it has retrieved it is governed by that application's own privacy policy.

5. Your Rights as a Data Subject

Within the framework of applicable law, you have the right to access, rectify, restrict, or request erasure of your personal data, and the right to data portability. Because your command, prompt and history data lives locally on your device, you can exercise most of these rights directly: reviewing or deleting commands and history from within the app, or removing WriteBetter's application data folder to delete everything at once.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the competent supervisory authority, and the right to withdraw any consent you have given (e.g. for the one-time cloud import or the n8n path) at any time by not using that feature going forward or by contacting us at the email above.

6. Data Retention

App data remains on your device for as long as WriteBetter is installed and you have not deleted it. Uninstalling the app does not automatically delete `~/Library/Application Support/WriteBetter/`; you can remove that folder manually for a complete local data removal. Diagnostic logs you may voluntarily share with us for support purposes are retained only as long as needed to resolve the issue.

7. Children's Privacy

WriteBetter is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the app's features change. The "Last Updated" date above reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be reflected in the app's release notes.

9. Contact

Questions about this policy or your data can be sent to contact@svenbadalyan.com.
